Journey Books---Part 1
A Journey in Grace
This is the story of a young pastor with a typical twentieth- century theology and his pursuit of a burning theological question which was triggered in his first experience with a pulpit search committee. He cannot and does not rest until he has answered the challenge of the question, "Young man, are you a Calvinist?"
As related by the author, the story of young Ira's theological quest is more than a cold theological presentation. The search from its beginning on the first pages to the end on the final pages is set in the context of real life people such as the reader has no doubt encountered in living the Christian life. The main character's roommate in college, his professors at school, the churches he pastors and his experiences in them, his friends, and his fiancé ˇre all woven into an interesting and surprising story.
Even those who think they do not have an analytical mind to plunge into the depths of the intricacies of theology will be amazed at the theology they learn (whether they agree or disagree with the conclusions of the book) from the reading of his unique story in its captivating setting.
A Journey in Purity
This is the gripping and challenging story of a young pastor, Ira Pointer, and his difficult and heart-breaking struggle to bring purity to the corrupt and impure church he pastors. From the initial and unexpected bizarre event which forces him to face the issue of church purity to the final resolution of the heart-breaking struggle, the reader is gripped by the unfolding story and its numerous twists and turns. Standing almost alone in this spiritual battle against the advice and counsel of fellow pastors, denominational workers and many of his church members, Pastor Pointer develops and seeks to apply clear Biblical convictions concerning church purity and discipline.
This is a book with which every pastor and church member who has ever wrestled with the principles and cost of church discipline will identify. Truly this is also a worthy and powerful sequel to the first theological novel, A Journey in Grace, by the same author.
A Journey in Authority
This is the continuing story of Ira Pointer, as he faces another theological pursuit, as it invades his new church. As he assumes the government of a church should be congregational , a jolting experience challenges him to consider the possibility that the New Testament teaches elder leadership.
As related by this young pastor, he faces many questions: What is an elder? What is an elder-led church? What is the authority of an elder? What is a pastor/teacher and how does he relate to the elders? What is a deacon and what are his duties? What is the church's obligation to the elders? Are the elders answerable only to God, or should there be accountability of the elders before the congregation? Could elder leadership have dangers even as congregational rule has proven to have dangers? What are these dangers? The search for these answers (like the previous novels) is set in the context of an intriguing story, this time a mystery, which threatens the life of Ira and some of his people.
A Journey in the Spirit
The pursuit of truth continues for Ira Pointer in this fourth theological novel from the pen of Richard Belcher. The subject of his search is the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. The journey begins as Pastor Pointer meets and befriends one of the most unique, intriguing and tragic men he will ever encounter. This man of tremendous talent is Pastor Pointer's successor at his previous pastorate, and he is the one who triggers the search with the question, "Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit since you were saved?"
With the search on, Pastor Ira faces many questions about the Holy Spirit. Who is the Holy Spirit? What work does the Holy Spirit perform? What about the filling of the Holy Spirit? Should all Christians expect to receive the gift of tongues as evidence of the fullness of the Spirit? Is there a distinction between the tongues of Acts and the tongues of I Corinthians? Has the gift of tongues ceased in the present day? The answers to these other questions, plus the tragic life of his new friend, are used of God to teach him many lessons concerning the person and work of the Holy Spirit.
A Journey in Inspiration
After several years without a theological pursuit, Pastor Ira Pointer sets off to seminary, only to find himself enmeshed once again in unique circumstances, which force him to define and defend his convictions concerning the nature of the inspiration of the Bible. In the unfolding of the plot, surprises confront him from the first day of class, to the solving of the mystery of the identity of "the strawman," while his convictions are built and strengthened towards the defending of the faith.
This book, which is the fifth of the "Journey" series, not only teaches theology through a griping story, but also sets forth the need to stand for truth in a biblical and Christlike manner. And it adds understanding to the controversy which raged and still rages over the nature of the Bible in the decades of this twentieth century.
A Journey in Providence
A tragedy in the family of one of the primary characters of the past journey series begins this sixth theological novel. Dink and Janie face an unexpected and unbelievable horror, which opens not only a search for truth concerning the providence of God in life's trials, but also a search to solve the mysteries involved in the tragedy. Unexpected twists and turns in the plot, as in the past journey books, make this a very readable experience, as well as a rewarding study of the providence of God as revealed in the book of Job.
From the providence of the initial tragedy to the providential vindication of God's servants in the tragedy to the providence of God exposing the party behind the tragedy, the author weaves biblical exposition and humor and mystery and blessing into a challenging, heart breaking and heartwarming story.
A Journey in Eschatology
This is the continuing story of Ira Pointer, as he faces another theological search. Thinking he is free of such pursuits for a while, he is again suddenly thrust into the most difficult of all quests, the search to unravel the various eschatological (pertaining to the last day) views of his day. His mind is at times boggled by the many eschatological terms, and claims -- Pre-mil, post-mil, a-mil, preterist, historicist, pre-trib, post-trib, etc.
But not only is he searching for an understanding of theology in this difficult area, but he is involved with another search. We learn in this book that he was reared in a children's home, having been abandoned by his parents at two years of age. So when the writing of this book opens the door to search for his birth parents, he at first rejects the possibility, but then after prayer, becomes deeply involved in that arduous and even dangerous challenge.
A Journey in Salvation
This is the continuing story of ira Pointer, as he faces another theological search, but this time for the sake of another. The journey begins when he meets a backslidden pastor named Jasper Showers, due to the friendship between their children. There are surprises and shocks when Ira learns who this pastor is, and that Pastor Showers thinks he has lost his salvation because of the mess he has made of his life and ministry. Ira comes to learn that the man is entrenched in accusations of crimes, and that he could even face the death penalty for murder.
The pastor friend first rebels, but then as Pastor Pointer ministers to him, God breaks him by the truth and through providential events. In the process of the story, the doctrine of salvation comes through with great clarity, and with the help of Dink, Ira seeks to clear the broken pastor of all accusations. Plus, the introduction of ten-year-old Ira, Jr. into the plot is refreshing and challenging to the young and old alike.
A Journey in Revival True or False?
The story of Professor Ira Pointer continues, as one of his students at the seminary challenges him to attend a new kind of revival full of great excitement and emotion. A study group at the seminary to probe the theological basis of the new movement is begun. An old friend, who previously has been a problem for Ira, reappears as the leading evangelist of the new emotional explosion. As controversy stirs on the seminary campus and beyond, Ira begins to feel pressure to resign from the faculty, as some object to his insistence on a theological analysis of the movement and its practices.
It is only the power and providence of God that comes to Professor Ira's rescue to avert serious vocational and bodily tragedy, as he waits trusting God to move and glorify His name in the whole set of impossible circumstances. Dink stands with him through the whole journey, and when it is over, a threat for the future still remains, but God has clearly given the victory in the struggle for the truth.
